Rakuten has acquired online drug seller Sokai Drug (www.soukai.com). Sokai was established by Sumitomo back in 2000, and has recently become a popular source of baby goods and petcare items. In 2016, sales were up 20.6% on last year, at ¥31 billion. Rakuten paid a reported ¥8.9 billion in cash for the site’s entire share issue.

Sokai will be combined with kenko.com, the biggest online drug seller, also owned by Rakuten.
